Jason Yap Kean Beng  叶健明 | BPsy.Sc (HU), BFA (Hons) (HKAPA)

Jason Yap, born and raised in Malaysia, began his dance education just before completing secondary school and has since trained in various genres including Latin, Hip Hop, Jazz, Contemporary and Ballet. In 2014, he completed a Bachelors of Psychological Science at HELP University and was accepted into the Bachelors of Fine Arts (Honours) programme majoring in Contemporary dance at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) a year later. 

 

Whilst in Hong Kong, Jason performed works for Malaysian artists including Jack Kek and Kuik Swee Boon, as well as international artists such as Gabrielle Nankivell and Mehdi Farajpour. In 2017, Jason co-presented his choreographic debut titled Kill Your Darlings. In 2018, he initiated his interdisciplinary art collective, STAGE. He also represented HKAPA at international events such as the Paris Summer Academy (2017), CAMPING, Ponderosa and ISPaR (2018). Upon graduation, he was awarded the Director's Award for his outstanding contribution to the Academy. 

Starting September 2019, he became a member of Divadlo Štúdio Tanca (Banská Bystrica, Slovakia) and has since performed a multitude of creations from both renowned local and international artists. These included Peter Mika's Ghost/Prizrak, Zuzana Hajkova's Cira Radost and Debris Company's Muž Bez Vlastností. He was also part of the reprisals for the award-winning production 3x20 Ženy which comprised of three 20 minute works by three female Slovak choreographers to commemorate the 20-year anniversary of the dance company's existence. 

 

Outside of dance, Jason has developed a penchant towards interdisciplinary art practices and aspires to become a producer and curator in the performing arts.
